New Fall Series in the Song of Solomon

Did you know there is a book in the Bible that’s filled with love poems?  It’s called the Song of Solomon.  Some interpreters say that the book is to be seen as an illustration of Christ’s love for his bride, the church.  The more common interpretation however, is to see this book as a celebration of human love and sexuality between a man and woman in a marriage relationship.  Marriage was God’s idea, this would also include the physical union of a husband and wife.

The idea of getting married has fallen on hard times.  Just bring it up in a conversation around the water cooler today at work.  For many marriage means you’ve given up.  You’ve decided to settle down and get old.  You’re ready to buckle down and get serious.  To help you stay on course, you get a ball and chain.

That’s not what God says marriage is.  It can be a relationship that brings incredible pleasure and joy.  This series will help strengthen your marriage.  If you’re not married it will help you as you prepare yourself for that special person and for your life together.

Special thanks to Kelly Stauffer for creating our set for this series!

When You’re Abandoned at Sea

titanic-nautical-1024I remember seeing the movie The Titanic.  The scene that still haunts me is the one after the great ship has gone down, and hundreds of people are afloat, stranded in the freezing water, screaming for help.  Seeing this on the big screen made it all the more realistic, like you were sitting there on a nearby iceberg.  That scene still scares me a little when I think about it.

I don’t want to be a float out in the ocean by myself, with thousand of feet of water below, and large sea creatures swimming around, many hungry, and with long teeth.  I can imagine nothing more frightening than being abandoned and no way to see below the water that reaches the chin.

Notice Jonah 1:15 - So they picked up Jonah and hurled him into the sea, and the sea ceased from its raging.

Jonah, instead of repenting and turning to God, confessing his sin, chose to be thrown into the angry ocean water and left for dead.  It shows us just how lost he was.  He was sure God would never use him again.  He was certain he was no longer a servant of God.  His world was dark and hopeless.

Jonah had made a terrible decision to run from God, but God was not finished with Jonah.  God would pursue him and rescue him in his great mercy and compassion, using a fish to pull him out of his pit of death.

Are you at a low point in your life?  Do you feel that maybe God is through with you, like you’ve run too far from him?  Is your world a storm?  Do you feel lost at sea?  If God graciously saved Jonah, know that he will save you too.  He is pursuing you in your storm.

Don’t throw in the towel, or throw yourself overboard, but throw yourself on the mercy of God.  He will restore you, calm your storm, and get you back on the right track.

I love these words from Charles Wesley.  Make them your prayer today.  “O Jesus, full of truth and grace, more full of grace than I of sin.  Yet once again I seek your face, open your arms and take me in.  And freely my backslidings heal, and love the faithless sinner still.  You know the way to bring me back, my fallen spirit to restore.  O for your truth and mercy’s sake, forgive, and bid me sin no more.  The ruins of my soul repair, and make my heart a house of prayer.”

Global Leadership Institue in Sierra Leone

sierra-leoneIn October of this year I’ll be going with three other pastors to Sierra Leone to participate in the Global Leadership Institute.  Sierra Leone is one of the poorest countries in the world.  It is 60% Muslim.  It was devastated by a ten-year civil war.  Many of the best and brightest fled the country during that time.  Those who stayed behind saw their world crumble.  Many were slaughtered, others had limbs hacked off. The infrastructure of the nation was destroyed.

The nation now has had a string of peaceful years, but the people still suffer.  Most lack clean drinking water causing many to suffer from all kinds of water born diseases.  The average age is just 40.

Pastors in developing countries rarely have time for formal Bible training. It is the goal of the Global Leadership Institute to bring the training to them.  The institute will provide a three-year certificate program, with pastors coming together in cohorts of 25 at a time for two weeks out of the year.  In a culture with education so hard to come by, a certificate of study from the Global Leadership Institute will be an honor.

One of the highlights of the trip will be the two days spent in the capital, Freetown.  There we will have the opportunity to meet with government leaders.  We want to dialogue about how the church in America could work with the government of Sierra Leone and the churches of Sierra Leone to help overcome some of the great obstacles holding the country and its people down – problems like illiteracy, lack of clean drinking water, and the lack of money for investing in small businesses so that hard working citizens can become self reliant.

Please keep this trip in your prayers!
