Mighty Men of Valor

I’m excited about a new ministry for the young junior high boys in our church.  We have quite a few with a ton of pent up energy.  They come on Wednesday nights ready to worship and study the Bible, and if they can squeeze in a wrestling match – all the better.

Our mission is to do what we can to help these young men grow to become mighty men of God.  To do this we’re launching a new ministry called Young Mighty Men of Valor.  Our theme verse for this group is 1 Chronicles 12:21 – They helped David against the band of raiders, for they were all mighty men of valor and were commanders in the army.

The kick off meeting will be on Saturday, March 20th from 10 AM to 12 PM.  I’m so thankful that David Smith and Eddie Randolph have agreed to help oversee this group.  We will be working through the Youth Specialties curriculum – Becoming a Young Man of God. Each session will involve Bible study, and an energetic, challenging activity.  We will also ask each young man to serve in an area of ministry on Sundays.

More details are to come!

Breaking the 200 Barrier

In Malcom Gladwell’s book, The Tipping Point, he makes reference to what is known as the social channel capacity.  The social channel capacity is the maximum number of people with whom we can have a genuine social relationship.[1] The idea is that we can only handle so many relationships, because together they can get quite complex, requiring much energy and brainpower.

Anthropologist Robin Dunbar has done a lot of research on this.  He looked at the maximum social capacities for monkeys, chimps, baboons, and people.  He discovered that humans socialize in the largest groups.  He believes the reason why we’re able is because our brains are large enough to handle it.  More specifically it is the neo cortex, which handles complex thought and reasoning.[2]

Dunbar actually created an equation in which he puts in the size of the neo cortex in relation to the size of the brain.  The idea is that the bigger the neo cortex the bigger the maximum social capacity.  He did this for humans and came up with the number 150.  150 seems to represent, according to his research, the maximum number of people one person can have a genuine social connection.  This is the kind of relationship that would allow you to enjoy a meal together if you met on accident at a restaurant.[3]

What’s more interesting is that our military has limited the size of fighting units to no larger than 200 men.  Even in a day and age when communication is at our fingertips, it’s still 200 men.  Dunbar writes, “…planners have discovered, by trial and error over the centuries, that it is hard to get more than this number of men sufficiently familiar with each other so that they can work together as a unit.”[4]

Also, the religious group, the Hutterites, who have lived together in colonies for hundreds of years, have a limit to this day on the size of their colonies.  That number is 150.  Once they grow past 150 they begin to make plans to start a new colony.[5]

What can we take away from this research that will help our churches grow?  I’m convinced that it is God’s will for the church to grow.  Healthy organisms grow naturally.

I think the main issue for churches stuck at or below 150 is that the pastor has maxed out his social capacity.  God has put limitations on the amount of social information we can manage.  Our neo cortex is only so big.  So, what’s the answer?

I think the answer is found in Carl George’s illustration of the sheepherder and the rancher.  The sheepherder knows all the sheep.  He knows their names, their problems, their concerns.  He visits them in the hospital.  He marries and buries them.  He’s the shepherd.  Scientific research seems to tell us that the average shepherd maxes out at about 150.

The answer is to become a rancher.  A rancher is a shepherd of shepherds.  George writes, “You must shift from doing the caring, which usually means you do it yourself, to seeing to it that people get cared for, which means you develop and manage a system of care giving that will include as many of your church’s lay leaders as possible.” Becoming a rancher is tough but it will lead to exponential growth for the Kingdom of God.[6]

God help raise up more shepherds to care for the great people in our church!

Online Sermon Video Now Available!

Recently we began to post the video of our Sunday sermons online and to offer them as a podcast through iTunes.  If you like you can now actually view a Sunday message or send a link via email to a friend who may need some encouragement, or to someone who is looking for a home church.

This is another great way we can outreach.  There are those who are intimidated about coming to an unfamiliar place, especially a church, but they will visit a website and watch a service in the safety of their own home.

There are two volunteers in our church who have worked very hard to make this happen.  First, Kelly Smith really took the initiative and began to tape the services and then converted them to an Internet format.  Second, Tess Taitano did a lot of research to learn how we could post video to our website.  Many hours were involved and I want to say thanks.  You made this outreach happen!  Thanks for serving so tirelessly behind the scenes.

Children’s Christmas Lunch

This year our church was able to contribute $3,000 to the Children’s Christmas Lunch organized and sponsored by Rabonni Missions International and Pastor Gregory Bangura.

The hope was to feed thousands of children in West Africa, a region of the world that is predominantly Muslim.  Unfortunately, many children in West Africa only eat once a day.

Christmas this year fell on Friday, which is the Muslim holy day.  Everyone goes to the mosque at noon.  Instead of going to the mosque on Friday this Christmas, the children could choose instead to go to a local church to eat a meal and enjoy some fun activities.

Over 3,000 children were fed in 4 West African nations – Ivory Coast, Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone.

It is our hope and prayer that God will take this seed of love planted and bring about a great harvest in the future for Christ in these nations.  Thank you to all who gave!

Daniel Fast at the Start of 2010

We are just days away from the end of the first decade of the 21st century.  Can you believe it?  It’s been 10 years since Y2K.  I don’t know about you, but I want to start out this new year, this second decade spiritually strong, alive, and alert.  One way to do that is through fasting.

What is fasting?  Fasting is abstaining from certain foods for a spiritual purpose.

There are different ways to fast.  One is to totally abstain from food, and drink only water.  Another way is to do a partial fast, abstaining only from certain foods.  We find that the prophet Daniel did a partial fast for 21 days.  This kind of fast has become known as a Daniel Fast.

Notice Daniel 10:3 -  I ate no delicacies, no meat or wine entered my mouth, nor did I anoint
myself at all, for the full three weeks.

Daniel fasted from meats, sweets, and alcohol, and drank only water and juice, and ate vegetables and fruit for 21 days.  For some, instead of alcohol it may be meats, sweets, and caffeine.  It was after this time of fasting that he had a great spiritual breakthrough.

We are going to have our first church-wide Daniel Fast starting on Monday, January 4th through Sunday, January 24th.

Maybe a Daniel fast is too much for you.  You can still participate!  Daniel’s fast was a partial fast.  What do you feel God wants you to fast from personally?

You can fast from just one thing like soda, sweets, TV, movies, tobacco, coffee, shopping, or the Internet.

During our fast we are going to take the time we would normally spend on eating and drinking, and use that time instead to pray and read the Bible.

We believe that like Daniel, God is going to give us
personally and as a church a mighty breakthrough in 2010.  Will you participate?

Weathering the Snow to Reach Out!

christmas parade dec 5 2009 1st snow 032Big thanks to all those who helped on Saturday hand out coffee, candy canes, handwarmers, and hot chocolate at the Manassas Christmas Parade.  Who would have thought it would snow? I wondered who would come to the parade in such difficult conditions.  Who from our church would show up to help?  Many showed up to watch even in the cold, and all of our volunteers were there as well.  The hot drinks and handwarmers were much appreciated by all.

For me the snow actually made it more memorable.  It was our first snow of the year and many of us got to share it together, as we showed the love of Christ in a real way to our community.  A seed was planted for the gospel, that we believe will bring fruit in God’s time.

Christmas Outreach

I’m very thankful that our church has answered the call to be givers of Jesus’ love during this special time of year.  When so many are focused on getting, those in our church have jumped at the opportunity to be a blessing to others.  It makes me very proud as a pastor.

This December our church has focused in on 3 different areas of outreach ministry.

1.  On one Sunday we raised over $3,000 for the Children’s Christmas Lunch.  This will be a free lunch for the children of 4 West African nations – Sierra Leone, Guinea, Liberia, and Ivory Coast.  The free lunch will be provided for children, many who only eat normally once a day.  The meal will be given by a local church who will then share the Christmas story to all who attend.

2. This coming Saturday, Dec. 5th we will be giving out free Starbucks Coffee and hot chocolate at the Manassas Christmas Parade.  Last year we gave away 400 cups.  This year we hope to do more.  Each cup will be labeled with an invitation to join us on Sundays in December as we celebrate Christmas.

3.  This year we are sponsoring 44 children through Prison Fellowship’s Angel Tree ministry.  The members of our church have chosen a child who has a parent in prison.  They’ll by a gift for that child in the name of that imprisoned parent and then we’ll deliver those gifts to the child.

God has blessed us as Christians to be a blessing.  What a joy it is to be a giver and to do all we can to reach the world around us for Jesus.

One Way Youth Update

19066553As many of you know Matt Gallant will be leaving us.  This weekend will be his last as he moves to Georgia to be married and start a new chapter in his life.  He has been with us, serving faithfully and with distinction for 2 years.  We will miss him greatly.

Thankfully, God has sent us a capable replacement.  Dave Jacob, our current worship leader, will be filling this spot for now.  One Way Youth will have a new leader, and a new night.  Starting in January the youth will meet on Wednesdays at 7 PM.  Their service will coincide with PrimeTime for kids, and our mid-week worship time.  I believe it’s going to all come together for a powerful weekly night of ministry.  So, keep Dave in your prayers as he takes on this added role.  I know he’ll do a great job!

What is Angel Tree?

This is a special outreach through the ministry of Prison Fellowship to kids who have a parent in prison. stacks_of_giftsWhen you pick up an angel from the tree you agree to purchase a gift in the name of the parent that is in prison.  The imprisoned parent has actually chosen an appropriate gift for their child.  That information has been given to us.  We then purchase the gift and deliver it to the child for the parent.  Pick up your angel today!  Don’t loose it!  Make sure and stick the angel on to your wrapped gift and bring it to church by Sunday, December 21st.

Help Us Deliver the Angel Tree Gifts on Monday, December 22nd at 7 PM and share the love of Jesus.  Sign up at the Information Table!
