Outreach to Sierra Leone 2010

One of the cool mission opportunities that has come our way is the Global Leadership Institute in Bo, Sierra Leone. We are now making the final plans for year two to be held October 4th to October 15th. The same cohort of 25 pastors that were trained last year are coming back for another two week intensive. Before we arrive the first year group will be training a new group of 25 pastors. After the third year our plan is to hand the institute over to the Sierra Leonian pastors for ongoing yearly pastoral training. Our vision is that many new churches will be planted in a nation that is over 80% Muslim.

Through our involvement with the GLI our church will also have an opportunity to sponsor a new, hand dug well located next to a church in Kenema, Sierra Leone. Drinkable water is a big need. Many in the community will then come to the church daily for water. This will open a door for many to come to salvation. I’m thankful for the work of Dr. John Thompson (http://www.allnationsfellowship.org/) and Pastor Gregory Bangura (http://rabboniworshipcentesierraleone.blogspot.com) for being the visionaries for the GLI.

Recent Crossway Blog

The Global Leadership Institute in Sierra Leone was recently the focus of the Crossway (ESV Study Bible publisher) blog.  My good friend, and co-instructor in the institute, Pastor Brian Main of Vienna, OH was able to get 25 ESV study Bibles donated to the pastors who participated in the institute.  Here’s a link to the blog article.

Wells of Salvation in Sierra Leone

We are fortunate in America.  If we’re thirsty we can reach for another 12 oz bottle of water and enjoy.  This isn’t the case for those in Sierra Leone.  Clean drinking water is a huge need.  Many die from water born diseases from unclean water supplies.

I remember at the beginning of 2009 thinking, “Wouldn’t it be awesome if God would open up a door for Victory’s Crossing to drill a well in Africa.”  I thought about it.  Talked with my wife about it.  Prayed about it.  Little did I know that through my friend John Thompson, I would meet Pastor Gregory Bangura from the Ivory Coast this year.

Pastor Gregory was with us this weekend as our special speaker.  He stayed in our home.  We toured the White House and had much time to talk and dream.  The short of it is he has contacts that drill wells.  He’s going to help us sponsor a well to be dug in October of 2010.  We’ll dig this well next to a church.  This is a great way not only to help a community with a tangible need.  It is a way to bring salvation in Jesus name as the church shows love.

Love opens all kinds of doors for the gospel. This well will be the first of many.  These will be wells of salvation!

October Trip to Sierra Leone

On Septemeber 30th I’ll be leaving for a 17 day trip to Sierra Leone to teach on the first year of the Global Leadership Institute.  I’m excited about this opportunity to spend 2 weeks training 25 pastors from surrounding towns and villages.  I’ll be working with John Thompson, pastor of All Nations Fellowship in Tulsa, OK, Brian Main, pastor of Walnut Creek Community Church in Warren, Ohio, and Gregory Bangura, our host and missionary living in the country.

Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone, was originally founded in 1787 as a home for freed salves.  It later became a British colony.  The slaves in Freetown were a captive audience for the European missionary societies, and many ex-slaves were converted to the faith.[1]

It received its independence from Britain in 1961.  Then in 1990 the Liberian Civil War caused a collapse in the government.[2] For the next 10 years civil war ravaged the country, destroying its infrastructure and terrorizing all.  The mayhem and destruction was caused by an internal war over Sierra Leone’s valuable diamond fields.

In an effort to bring terror and control, the rebels in the country ruthlessly maimed thousands.  It is reported that over 250,000 people had their arms or legs hacked off.  Over 70% of the women and little girls who fell into the hands of the rebel soldiers were brutally raped.  It is estimated that 6,000 children were kidnapped and forced to become soldiers, killing others, even forced to kill family members.[1] Since the end of the war a string of peaceful years has led to some hope, but it is fragile.

What so exciting about the Global Leadership institute is that we are filling a need.  It is estimated that 70% of the pastors in the county have no formal Bible training.  Many of the seminaries were destroyed or abandoned during the civil war.  Today, what was once a Christian stronghold is now only 12% Christian.

New Fall Series in the Song of Solomon

Did you know there is a book in the Bible that’s filled with love poems?  It’s called the Song of Solomon.  Some interpreters say that the book is to be seen as an illustration of Christ’s love for his bride, the church.  The more common interpretation however, is to see this book as a celebration of human love and sexuality between a man and woman in a marriage relationship.  Marriage was God’s idea, this would also include the physical union of a husband and wife.

The idea of getting married has fallen on hard times.  Just bring it up in a conversation around the water cooler today at work.  For many marriage means you’ve given up.  You’ve decided to settle down and get old.  You’re ready to buckle down and get serious.  To help you stay on course, you get a ball and chain.

That’s not what God says marriage is.  It can be a relationship that brings incredible pleasure and joy.  This series will help strengthen your marriage.  If you’re not married it will help you as you prepare yourself for that special person and for your life together.

Special thanks to Kelly Stauffer for creating our set for this series!

Global Leadership Institue in Sierra Leone

sierra-leoneIn October of this year I’ll be going with three other pastors to Sierra Leone to participate in the Global Leadership Institute.  Sierra Leone is one of the poorest countries in the world.  It is 60% Muslim.  It was devastated by a ten-year civil war.  Many of the best and brightest fled the country during that time.  Those who stayed behind saw their world crumble.  Many were slaughtered, others had limbs hacked off. The infrastructure of the nation was destroyed.

The nation now has had a string of peaceful years, but the people still suffer.  Most lack clean drinking water causing many to suffer from all kinds of water born diseases.  The average age is just 40.

Pastors in developing countries rarely have time for formal Bible training. It is the goal of the Global Leadership Institute to bring the training to them.  The institute will provide a three-year certificate program, with pastors coming together in cohorts of 25 at a time for two weeks out of the year.  In a culture with education so hard to come by, a certificate of study from the Global Leadership Institute will be an honor.

One of the highlights of the trip will be the two days spent in the capital, Freetown.  There we will have the opportunity to meet with government leaders.  We want to dialogue about how the church in America could work with the government of Sierra Leone and the churches of Sierra Leone to help overcome some of the great obstacles holding the country and its people down – problems like illiteracy, lack of clean drinking water, and the lack of money for investing in small businesses so that hard working citizens can become self reliant.

Please keep this trip in your prayers!

Why Belong to a Local Church?

There are two ways the word church is used in the New Testament.  One is for the “universal church”, meaning all people in the world who claim Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, placing their faith in him alone.  The other way is for an actual group of believers who band together as a community of faith in a particular place, at a particular time.  With only a few exceptions, when the word “church” is used, it is always used in this second way, describing a local body of believers.  Here are a few examples.

Rom. 16:5 – Greet also the church in their house. Greet my beloved Epaenetus, who was the first convert* to Christ in Asia.

1 Cor. 1:2 – To the church of God that is in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints together with all those who in every place call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours:

Philemon 2 – and Apphia our sister and Archippus our fellow soldier, and the church in your house:

Many more could be listed.  The point is simply this.  God wants you to belong not just to the universal church, but to have roots in a local church that meets regularly for worship.  Why?  God is glorified when we join together in relationship to serve him and be a witness for him.  It also produces greater maturity because God uses our relationships to make us grow.  If we have no meaningful connection with other believers, we’re not growing.

Because church membership is so important we have a special class called Belong 101 that deals with this subject.  Our next class is this Sunday at 1 PM. If you are interested in joining

Victory’s Crossing or would like more information about our church, this is the class for you.  Discover the vision and beliefs of our community and how to become a member of our church family.

Don't Be a Trashcan

Who is it you need to forgive?  The word “forgiveness” in the Greek literally means to release, let go, to loose, or send away.  That’s what forgiveness is.  It’s letting go.  It’s letting go of my desire to get even.  It’s letting go of my desire to make someone pay.  It’s letting go of my desire to make another suffer.  It’s letting go of my desire to let them know how mad I am.  It’s letting go of the hurt.  It’s letting go and leaving justice in the hands of God.

When it comes to forgiveness you really only have two options.  One is to hold onto your resentment, anger, and bitterness.  When you do that you’re choosing to be a garbage can.  I’ve got two really good-looking trashcans at home.  They are painted with green, shiny paint.  But, when I open the lid it’s filled with trash, and it stinks.  It’s filled with garbage.  It’s a trashcan.  They’re a lot of Christians today who look good on the outside, but on the inside there’s a lot of trash, wounds, and hurts that have collected over the years and it stinks up their lives.

The other option is to let go of resentment, anger, and bitterness by God’s grace.  When you do that you choose to be a fresh spring.  You can drink from a spring because the water is pure.  No matter what impurities contaminate the water down stream, there is always a fresh supply coming out.  That’s what forgiving love is.  Forgiving love is a life, giving spring that will heal your marriage, clean out wounds, and flush out clogged channels of communication.  I don’t know about you, but I want to be a fresh spring.  I want to be a person who forgives.

Ephesians 4:32 says, “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.”

Wednesday Night Worship

I look forward to the beginning of Wednesday Night Worship starting October 15 at 7 PM.  Here’s why I’m so excited about it.  It will be another opportunity to get together and worship, pray, and study God’s Word.  In Hebrews 10:25 it says, Not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.  What encouragement when we stand together as one and lift our voices in worship and hear God’s Word proclaimed!

Here’s the teaching plan for Wednesday Night Worship through the end of 2008.  We’re going to start at the very beginning and study the first 11 chapters of the book of Genesis.  These chapters lay a foundation for understanding the message of the Bible.  Then we’ll jump ahead and finish up where we left off in our series studying the lives of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob – Building a Strong Family.

October 15 – God Created

October 22 – The Fall

October 29 – Cain and Abel

November 5 – The Flood

November 12 – The Tower of Babel

November 19 – Jacob and Laban

December 3 – Jacob Wrestles with God

December 10 – The Story of Dinah

December 17 – Joseph Saves His Family

December 24 – Christmas Eve Service

December 31 – No Service

For the children, we’ll have nursery, and PrimeTime.  Make sure to be there on October 14 for the kickoff.  Mary Chaney is planning a carnival with all kinds of fun activities.
